| I often feel, like many exiled Cubans, that my native city of Havana haunts me, or perhaps it is I who haunt it? I often paint it from photographs, and project myself into its streets to revisit it even after 44 years. In this piece, the beautiful mulata represents all of Cuban womanhood irresistible in its youthful flower, sitting alone on a classical balcony, in a stark contrast to the captive city slowly disintegrating around her. It's a suitable metaphor for Cuba today. |
