| This was painted from a photograph taken by a client who visited Cuba in 2000, hence the title. The group of women in front of the buildings represents a good cross-section of humanity, but I identified with the young girl on the right--she appears to be about the same age I was when I left Cuba, and further observation reveals that she must be a member of the "Young Pioneers", the Communist Party organization for school-age children. How do I deduce this? Because although not quite seen, her gesture indicates she is tying a scarf around her neck; the red scarf is the insignia of the Young Pioneers. Such might have been my fate had I been born 20 or 30 years later...membership in this organization is obligatory for those with aspirations to higher schooling and social standing. |
